Magic in Earthsea is not merely a tool but a relationship with the essence of existence. Wizards are taught that every being, from stone to star, possesses a True Name in the Old Speech. To know this name is to hold authority over it. The Order teaches that such power must never be used for domination or personal gain, lest it disrupt the Balance and invite shadow into the world. The School on Roke serves as the primary sanctuary for this learning, isolated by sea to protect its secrets and focus. However, the history of the wizards is not without flaw. For centuries, they maintained a strict separation between wizardry and witchcraft, often excluding women from their ranks and dismissing female magic as lesser. This division created tension that eventually threatened the very fabric of the society. In later ages, following great trials involving death and shadow, the Order began to reconcile these fractures. The distinction between male wizards and female witches softened as new generations recognized that the Balance requires all forms of life and power to be acknowledged. The legacy of the wizards remains a testament to wisdom hard-won through failure.

In Their Own Story

The wind off the northern sea carried the scent of salt and pine as Ged stood upon the stone balcony of Roke. Below, the waves crashed against the black cliffs, timeless and indifferent. He held no staff now, only his hands, weathered by years of sailing and ruling. The Archmage had spoken of a disturbance in the Balance, a whisper of shadow that did not belong. Ged closed his eyes, listening to the names of the wind and water. They sang their old songs, but one note was discordant. He knew then that the Order could not hide behind its walls forever. Magic was meant for the world, not just the school. Turning from the railing, he stepped back into the warm light of the tower, ready to face whatever truth lay beyond the horizon.
