Sparrowhawk intervened against Lord Cob, a powerful warlock ruling Hort Town. He guided Prince Arren to safety after the prince killed his father, taking him to a farm run by Tenar, his oldest friend. When Hare captured Tenar as bait, Sparrowhawk broke into Cob's castle to save her and learned that Cob was opening the door between life and death to gain eternal life. He freed Arren from Cob's control but was subsequently captured by Hare.

In Their Own Story

Sparrowhawk rescued Prince Arren from wolves in the desert and traveled with him to Hort Town. After Arren was captured and his sword dumped in the sea, Sparrowhawk saved him again and bought his sword back from a merchant. He evaded capture by Hare while learning about Cob's castle plans. Later, he freed Tenar from execution but was taken prisoner himself, leaving Therru to find Arren and restore hope.

Reader's Guide

Sparrowhawk is the Archmage of Earthsea and an old friend of Tenar. Years prior, he defeated Lord Cob before the warlock could control the dead, banishing him to the Wastelands. In the film, he guides a seventeen-year-old Prince Arren, who is haunted by a shadow due to his fear of death.
