Born on Gont Island with an innate gift for magic, Ged was sent to the School of Roke where his brilliance was matched by his impatience. A moment of youthful hubris unleashed a dark entity that hunted him across the seas, forcing him to confront the nature of power and identity. His journey became one of reconciliation rather than domination. At about eighteen or nineteen, he ventured into the Tombs of Atuan to retrieve the Ring of Erreth-Abke, freeing the young priestess Tenar. Eventually returning as Archmage, he guided the islands when magic began to fade from the world. In his middle age, he traveled with Arren to stop Cob's obsession with immortality. After closing the door Cob opened between the living and the dead, Ged retained his magic for decades until old age, spending time in solitude as a goatherd on Gont. He later found companionship with Tenar, now a widow with grown children, and her adopted daughter Tehanu. The story notes that Ogion died during this period.
